Lecturers and Academics

Group visits
We are able to host free group visits and sessions for both UK and international academic institutions. These sessions are open to, and tailored for, all academic levels, including undergraduate, postgraduate, PhD, and apprenticeships, as well as for all disciplines and courses.
Alongside offering options for a general introduction session (consisting of an introduction to what an archive is, the collections at The London Archives, and a behind the scenes tour and viewing of original archival documents), we also can curate bespoke sessions depending on your teaching needs – previous sessions include Black British history, the sexual history of London, and Islington architecture.
All sessions aim to support students in their understanding of what an archive is, and how it can support their studies. This is done through practical demonstrations using the collections catalogue and tours of archival storage areas to show how the archive functions. Each session involves getting hands-on with documents, some from as early as the medieval period.
These sessions are led by a member of our Engagement and Learning team. If you’re interested in running your own session for your students at the archives using our resources, or have a particular way you want a session to be run, contact us and we’ll do our best to accommodate you.
Booking is essential for group visits. To set up a visit, or if you have any questions, please email tla.learning@cityoflondon.gov.uk
Free resources
The London Archives is a free place for students to study which provide access to world class resources including our Mediatheque, London Picture Archive and our 100,000-volume library on the history of London, alongside printed maps (highlights include facsimiles of the bomb damage map) and microfilm readers.
Archival research
For those wanting to take their study a little deeper you can register for a History Card which allows you to order documents through our catalogue . We know navigating the catalogue can sometimes be a little tricky, so we have a helpful video about how to order documents, and our team are on hand to help you with your research.
Other ways to learn?
We also offer a core programme of talks and tours which are designed to highlight parts of our collection, and offer a deeper understanding of our records. Check our Eventbrite page or sign up to our newsletter to find out more.
