Wandsworth Prison 175 Years of Public Service
Talk
This talk by Stewart McLaughlin, Honorary Curator of the Wandsworth Prison Museum, offers a vivid exploration of Wandsworth Prison’s remarkable history.
He traces its development from the Surrey House of Correction to its nationalisation in 1878 and later life as HMP Wandsworth, highlighting famous inmates, wartime episodes, spies, traitors, escapes, executions, and memorable prisoner and staff stories.
McLaughlin, who opened the Wandsworth Prison Museum in 2008 to mark the prison’s 150th anniversary and reopened it in a new purpose-built space in 2017, brings unique insight drawn from his long-standing expertise and deep connection with the institution.
