Christie in the City - Agatha Christie’s London

Literary event

2026 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the death of Agatha Christie, the world’s best-selling author.

London had a special place in Agatha’s heart, dating back to childhood, when she would go there to visit her maternal family. In adulthood she owned several homes and worked in the capital. She wrote 66 crime fiction novels, over 150 short stories and was a playwright, with her 'The Mousetrap' being the world’s longest running play. London is a re-occurring location in Agatha’s stories. It is where Hercule Poirot, Tommy and Tuppence reside and where Miss Marple goes on holiday.

Tina Hodgkinson takes us on a tour of Christie in the City, to explore many of the London locations that have a personal or literary connection with Agatha. Discover Agatha’s inspiration for the character of Miss Marple. Find out the places where she qualified and later worked with poisonous substances, which feature prominently in so many of her stories. Hear about the infamous Detection Club, a social networking club for crime fiction authors, where they met and what they did in Agatha’s time. Find the location of several of her homes, from a charming mews house to an iconic block of flats. We will also follow in Agatha’s footsteps to visit some of the fashionable restaurants, luxury hotels and other locations that she and her characters frequented.
