Join us to celebrate the rich history of The Africa Centre - explore material from their archives held at The London Archives.

Our Archives on Show events are a chance for us to show you the wide range of material we hold at The London Archives.

Whether you are new to archives and curious to see what we hold, or you are an experienced researcher that wants to learn more, these relaxed events offer a chance for you to see a selection of original materials on a changing monthly theme.

This month's theme: "The Africa Centre"

Discover a selection of archival material tracing the history of The Africa Centre, a London based charity established in 1961 that supports and connects Africa and its diaspora through art, culture, heritage, and debate. The Centre had its very own lecture hall, library, restaurant, night club and radio show hosting legendary political figures and cultural icons like Dr Kenneth Kaunda, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Walter Rodney, Wala Danga, Sonia Boyce and more. These records offer a clear look at the Centre’s founding, its programming, and its role as a space for discussion, creativity, and cultural exchange.

What to expect:

  • Curated display of archival material - available for you to handle and explore at your own pace.
  • Informal atmosphere with staff on hand to answer queries about items on display.
  • Spend as long as you like looking at the material within the session time - while it doesn't include a formal talk, members of our team will be on hand to answer questions and to discuss the selection of items.
  • In addition to browsing the material, you'll also be able to view the current display in our Information Area "Spotlight on The Africa Centre" (on show until 2 July).

Booking Essential: The event takes place on Friday 12 June, and you can book for a one hour session starting at 1pm or 2pm.
