Archives on Show: Hospital Records
Explore our rich collection of archival records relating to London hospitals in this free hands-on event.
Our Archives on Show events are a chance for us to show you the wide range of material we hold at The London Archives.
Whether you are new to archives and curious to see what we hold, or you are an experienced researcher that wants to learn more, these relaxed events offer a chance for you to see a selection of original materials on a changing monthly theme.
This month's theme: "Hospital Records"
Did you know that The London Archives holds the historical records of over 80 London hospitals?
We hold the archives of 4 major London teaching hospitals - Guy's, St Thomas', St George's and Westminster Hospital - as well as archives of local hospitals such as Edgware General Hospital, Hounslow Hospital and Lambeth.
We also hold archival records of hospitals for women and children such as Chelsea Hospital for Women and the Evelina Hospital, for specific conditions such as Moorfields Eye Hospital, and infectious diseases hospitals such as Joyce Green and North Western Hospitals.
Additionally, we hold the archives of several former psychiatric hospitals including St Luke's Hospital, Banstead, Friern (formerly Colney Hatch Asylum) etc.
In this session we will showcase several types of archival records that researchers can expect to find in hospital collections, such as patient records, administrative documents, records of staff and training of nurses, photographs, plans and printed material.
What to expect:
- Curated display of archival material from our collections - available for you to handle and explore at your own pace.
- Informal atmosphere with staff on hand to answer queries about items on display.
- Spend as long as you like looking at the material within the session time - while it doesn't include a formal talk, members of our team will be on hand to answer questions and to discuss the selection of items.
- Each month we focus on a specific topic, type of record, or theme.
Booking Essential: You can book for a one hour session at 1pm or 2pm.
