Magna Carta is probably the most famous document in English history. The London Archives are proud to look after two versions of this iconic document.

Inspired by our Spotlight on Medieval London display, we will delve into the medieval origins of Magna Carta and see why the document was issued multiple times throughout the 13th century by several different kings.

We will then hear how a document that emerged from the internecine conflicts of medieval nobles became a symbol of liberty and equality for all. Finally, we look at some of the myths and misconceptions that have emerged in the over 800 years since this document was first issued.
