From politicians to servants, nurses to rat catchers, London has long been a magnet for those looking for work. Including both the famous and the forgotten, for centuries images of countless Londoners have been recorded going about their daily work in the capital.
The photographs, prints and drawings on display in this exhibition are from the collections at The London Archives, which preserves millions of historical images of London and Londoners from the fifteenth century to the present day.
Trying to choose from such a wealth of material is a challenge and this exhibition can only present a selection of the people, jobs and professions that appear in the archive. Many of these images are staged by artists and photographers but they give us an idea of the lives of working Londoners through history.
From Monday 27 July to Monday 24 August 2026 it will be at St Paul's Churchyard.
Londoners on Trial
Crime, Courts and the Public 1244-1924
Our current exhibition explores the history of law and order in London, uncovering the stories of London’s criminals, victims and law enforcers from the medieval period to modern times. Runs until 25 February 2027
