Spotlight on The Africa Centre

Free display

On display from 9 February to 2 July 2026

Explore our special display celebrating the rich history and cultural impact of The Africa Centre, founded in 1961.

Trace the evolution of The Africa Centre from a post-independence diplomatic hub to a dynamic space for diasporic creativity, resistance, and celebration in the heart of London.

Over the last 60 years The Africa Centre offered a vital “home away from home” for Africa and its diaspora. A gathering place where dignitaries, thinkers, artists, musicians, and everyday people could connect. Hosting legendary figures such as writer Chinua Achebe, poet Wole Soyinka, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and celebrated musicians like Youssou N’Dour.

Step into the story of The Africa Centre through original archives, deposited at The London Archives.
