City of London Heritage Gallery Exhibition: Epping Forest

Stretching from the suburbs of East London to Epping in Essex, Epping Forest offers nearly 6,000 acres of ancient woodland and open heath for recreation, conservation, and enjoyment. Managed by the City of London Corporation since the nineteenth century, it is the largest publicly owned open space in the London area. This unique relationship began in the 1870s when the Corporation led a landmark campaign to save the area from enclosure and continues to this day as a model of long-term stewardship and public access.

On display at the Heritage Gallery are a selection of items showcasing this rich history.

Highlights include:

  • An historic map by William D’Oyley, local surveyor and first Superintendent
  • A decorative invitation to attend the visit of Queen Victoria in 1882
  • A Forest Keeper’s daily diary from 1903
  • Posters which were displayed in and around the forest from the late nineteenth century onwards

The City Heritage Gallery is located within Guildhall Art Gallery. We recommend that you book a free general admission ticket to gain entry to the Heritage Gallery.
