Over, Under and Across - Part Three "Across"

Join us for an illustrated talk about the history and traditions of the River Thames Watermen.

If you want to get from one side of a river to the other you have three choices: go over, go under or go across. In this series of illustrated talks we will see how Londoners have done all three and in doing so created feats of engineering, iconic landmarks and enduring traditions.

In the third part of this series we look at the oldest way of getting to the other side of a river: going across. This talk will mainly focus on the River Thames waterman whilst touching on a few other riverine trades and traditions.

About the Speaker

Tom Furber is an Engagement and Learning Officer at The London Archives. He is a historical magpie who enjoys nothing more (in his professional life at least) than delving into the vast collections of The London Archives to bring out its trinkets and treasures to share with our visitors.

Tom is also a doctoral candidate at Royal Holloway, University of London, and a fellow of the London Centre for Public History. His research focuses on inclusive engagement practice in archive settings.
