Over, Under, and Across - Part One "Over"
Come to this talk to hear about the history of London’s bridges across the River Thames.
If you want to get from one side of a river to the other you have three choices: go over, go under or go across. In this series of illustrated talks we will see how Londoners have done all three and in doing so created feats of engineering, iconic landmarks and enduring traditions.
In the first part of the series we look at going over the river by building bridges. London’s bridges are the reason that the city exists and remain fundamental to the city infrastructure. They are also a global symbol of London.
This talk explores the unique character of London's bridges. Discover why they are how they are and how they could have been.

About the Speaker
Tom Furber is an Engagement and Learning Officer at The London Archives. He is a historical magpie who enjoys nothing more (in his professional life at least) than delving into the vast collections of The London Archives to bring out its trinkets and treasures to share with our visitors.
Tom is also a doctoral candidate at Royal Holloway, University of London, and a fellow of the London Centre for Public History. His research focuses on inclusive engagement practice in archive settings.
