Evening Talk: Christmas in the City

From Saturnalia to Yule, mumming and Tudor feasts, discover centuries of festive traditions in the Square Mile.

Despite being known as the Financial District, with a reputation for focusing on money, the City of London embraces the Christmas spirit. In December each year, it becomes a place where trees are decorated, lights twinkle; and carols ring out from the City churches.

The people who live and work in the Square Mile have celebrated the festive season in many ways, making merry through the centuries. The Romans brought over the winter festival of Saturnalia, the Saxons introduced Yule, there was Medieval Mumming and Tudor feasting.
