East Asian Papers in Conservation - History, Identification and Use
A one-day workshop for conservators exploring the history and identification of East Asian papers and their uses in conservation.
Join us at The London Archives where we will delve into the fascinating world of East Asian papers. Discover their rich history, learn how to identify these unique papers, and explore their various uses in conservation.
This one-day workshop will run twice over two days. It will be led by Takao Moriki and Shinobu Moriki from Moriki Paper Ltd., and Megumi Mizumura, Senior Paper Conservator at the British Museum.
It will be a great opportunity for conservators to learn historic and practical applications of East Asian paper!
The workshop is split into two sessions
The morning session is an engaging talk on the history and development of papermaking, focussing particularly on Japan. Topics include:
- Fibres & manufactures
- Papermaking in Japan, Korea, China, the Middle East and Europe
- Japanese papermaking: traditional vs modern
- Trade in papers for conservation
The afternoon session is a practical workshop in our conservation studio. This will cover:
- Japanese paper varieties and their identification
- Uses in paper conservation, e.g. tear repair/ toning/ dyeing
- Maintenance of Japanese brushes
Please note when purchasing tickets:
- Choose the date you would like to attend on Friday 13 November OR Saturday 14 November.
- Then choose the relevant option of the full day workshop 10am - 4pm (£200), OR the morning lecture only 10am - 12noon (£20).
What to expect:
- The full workshop will start at 10am so please arrive a little before then. It is expected to finish at 4pm.
- Tea, coffee and pastries will be provided on arrival. There will be a lunch break but lunch is not provided.
- There will be an opportunity to purchase Moriki products during the workshop.
- The morning lecture takes place 10am - 12noon.
