Archives on Show: Sources for Exploring Disability History

Discover how our collections can be used to trace the history of disability in London in this free hands-on event.

Our Archives on Show events are a chance for us to show you the wide range of material we hold at The London Archives.

Whether you are new to archives and curious to see what we hold, or you are an experienced researcher that wants to learn more, these relaxed events offer a chance for you to see a selection of original materials on a changing monthly theme.

This month's theme: "Sources for Exploring Disability History"

In November, we will mark Disability History Month 2026 by exploring the extensive collections that we hold relating to disability. Join us to see a selection of our historical documents from hospitals, specialist services, education providers and charities connected with the lives, education and care of people with disabilities. This session will include documents showing the changing attitudes to disability over time.

What to expect:

• Curated display of archival material - available for you to handle and explore at your own pace. Informal atmosphere with staff on hand to answer queries about items on display.
• Spend as long as you like looking at the material within the session time - while it doesn't include a formal talk, members of the TLA team will be on hand to answer questions and to discuss the selection of items.
• Explore titles from RIBA's journals collection. Staff from the RIBA library will also be on hand to discuss their selections. This webpage has more about RIBA’s current partnership with The London Archives.

Booking Essential:

• The event takes place on Friday 13 November only, and you can book to join us between 1 - 2pm or 2 - 3pm.
• Doors open at 12.45pm. You can arrive at any time within your booked session as there is no formal talk, though please note that the event ends at 3pm. We suggest to arrive by 2.30pm if you have booked for the later session.
