Explore our rich collection of records relating to burials and funerals in this hands-on event.

Our Archives on Show events are a chance for us to show you the wide range of material we hold at The London Archives.

Whether you are new to archives and curious to see what we hold, or you are an experienced researcher that wants to learn more, these relaxed events offer a chance for you to see a selection of original materials on a changing monthly theme.

This month's theme: "London's Dead"

In October we will be exploring records relating to London's dead - including burials, churchyards, funerals and funerary traditions and London's great cemeteries. The collections at The London Archives offer a wealth of material relating to London’s dead. Covering burials in parish churchyards to the building of the great cemeteries, this session will explore the traditions behind funerals and funerary rites and the challenges London has faced in dealing with its dead.

What to expect:

  • Curated display of archival material - available for you to handle and explore at your own pace.
  • Informal atmosphere with staff on hand to answer queries about items on display.
  • Spend as long as you like looking at the material within the session time - while it doesn't include a formal talk, members of the TLA team will be on hand to answer questions and to discuss the selection of items.
  • Explore titles from RIBA's journals collection. Staff from the RIBA library will also be on hand to discuss their selections. This webpage has more about RIBA’s current partnership with The London Archives.

Booking Essential:

  • The event takes place on Friday 9 October only, and you can book to join us between 1 - 2pm or 2 - 3pm.
  • You can arrive at any time within your booked session as there is no formal talk, though please note that the event ends at 3pm. We suggest to arrive by 2.30pm if you have booked for the later session.
