Discover how our collections can be used to explore themes relating to crime and punishment in London.

Our Archives on Show events are a chance for us to show you the wide range of material we hold at The London Archives.

Whether you are new to archives and curious to see what we hold, or you are an experienced researcher that wants to learn more, these relaxed events offer a chance for you to see a selection of original materials on a changing monthly theme.

This month's theme: "Criminal Records"

In December we will highlight collections relating to London's courts, such as the records of the Middlesex Sessions, the Old Bailey, and the records of magistrates' courts. You can also explore records relating to prisons and punishments and discover additional stories that we didn't have space for in our current exhibition 'Londoners On Trial: Crime, Courts and the Public 1244-1924'.

What to expect:

  • Curated display of archival material - available for you to handle and explore at your own pace.
  • Informal atmosphere with staff on hand to answer queries about items on display.
  • Spend as long as you like looking at the material within the session time - while it doesn't include a formal talk, members of the TLA team will be on hand to answer questions and to discuss the selection of items.
  • Explore titles from RIBA's journals collection. Staff from the RIBA library will also be on hand to discuss their selections. This webpage has more about RIBA’s current partnership with The London Archives.
  • You can also explore our current free exhibition 'Londoners On Trial: Crime, Courts and the Public 1244-1924'

Booking Essential:

  • The event takes place on Friday 11 December only, and you can book to join us between 1 - 2pm or 2 - 3pm.
  • Building opens at 12.50pm. You can arrive at any time within your booked session as there is no formal talk, though please note that the event ends at 3pm. We suggest to arrive by 2.30pm if you have booked for the later session.
